Mounting live-edge shelves requires a special type of hardware to remain “floating.” The most common method uses concealed rod brackets. Time: 1 hour. Materials: Floating shelf brackets, drill, long drill bit, level.
- First, purchase heavy-duty floating shelf brackets rated for your shelf’s weight.
- Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall. This is non-negotiable for heavy wood shelves. Mark their locations.
- Attach the bracket plate to the wall, making sure it is perfectly level and secured into the studs.
- Carefully measure the rod positions on the bracket. Transfer these measurements to the back edge of your live-edge slab.
- Using a drill with a long bit that matches the rod diameter, drill straight holes into the back of your shelf. This is the trickiest step—go slow and keep it level!
- Slide the shelf onto the rods. It should be a snug fit.
